The Areas We Cover
Brooklyn is where most of our work happens, and we also take jobs in Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island. On the New Jersey side we cover Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Bayonne, Newark and Elizabeth. If you are in New York or this part of New Jersey and not sure we reach you, ask on the phone and you will get a straight answer.
Distance doesn't cut the list of services. Every town we serve gets drywall repair, drywall patching, ceiling repair, drywall hanging and drywall finishing, plus surface preparation and sanding and paint touch-ups on the areas we repair. Before work begins we write down the square footage, board thickness, finish level and how we will match the existing texture, so a property manager in Queens and a homeowner in Hoboken get the same kind of quote.
What We Find in Walls Around the Metro
- 01
Older buildings, mixed materials
Much of the housing here is prewar, so we often open a wall and find plaster over wood or metal lath next to newer sheetrock from a past renovation. The two move differently and take compound differently. We note the wall type in your quote, because joining drywall to old plaster needs a feathered transition and sometimes a skim coat to hide the seam.
- 02
Seasonal cracking
Humid summers and dry, radiator-heated winters make framing and board expand and shrink. That is why taped joints crack along ceilings and corner bead pops at door frames. We cut out loose tape, re-bed it in setting compound and finish it, instead of filling the crack with caulk that splits again next winter.
- 03
Water damage from above
In row houses and apartment buildings, a leak from the unit or bathroom upstairs is one of the most common reasons we get called. Wet gypsum loses strength and sags. We check the board with a moisture meter, cut back to dry material and replace it, and we wait until the leak itself has been fixed before closing anything up.
- 04
Building rules and permits
Co-ops, condos and managed rentals often set work hours, elevator reservations and rules for protecting hallways, so we ask about them before scheduling. Small drywall repairs usually do not need a permit, while larger alterations can, depending on the local building department. If your job might cross that line, we tell you before you agree to anything.
- 05
Dust and a clean work area
Apartments leave little room to spread out. We lay drop cloths, mask doorways and vents with plastic, and use a vacuum on our sanders, then clean up at the end of each day so your home stays livable while the compound dries.
